UMGC traces its roots to the establishment of the College of Special and Continuation Studies (CSCS) by the University of Maryland, College Park in 1947. Initially offering evening classes for adult learners, CSCS expanded its offerings and adopted the name University of Maryland University College (UMUC) in 1970. In 2019, the university rebranded as the University of Maryland Global Campus to better reflect its global reach and online focus.
